Despite being citizens of Western countries, the 36 men and women were detained and some were abused by Chinese authorities. While their heroic protest sent shockwaves around China, their peaceful appeal forced the international community to sit up and take notice.

Mr. Zenon Dolnyckj, a Canadian Falun Gong practitioner, being dragged to a police van by Tiananmen Square police.

The demonstration was secretly filmed by Joel Chipkar, who sewed a camera lens into his backpack strap and then secretly FedEx'ed the footage out of China before police could arrest him.

The group's goal was to unfold a golden banner with three words: Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance. As the core tenets of Falun Gong, these principles were banned by the Chinese regime. The practitioners, seen peacefully protesting in meditation here, were swarmed by police within 30 seconds, beaten, and dragged to detention centers.
